Among the recent 90-plus BTI graduates wearing blue and gold regalia representing teaching and counselling degrees and diplomas were five graduates wearing green. The new colour represents the very first cohort of students to graduate from BTI’s Bachelor of Social Work degree programme, which began in 2012. And each of the five have found employment as social workers immediately after completing their study.

BTI will remember for quite some time to come. Not only is it their coming of age – 21 this year; it is also the year in which NQZA gave approval for BTI to deliver two new qualifications: the Postgraduate Diploma of Professional Practice and the Master of Professional Practice.

However, in the small town of Bethlehem, Tauranga, the exciting news of the day was that a new tertiary provider had been born!

BTI began as Bethlehem Teachers College in 1993 with one full-time lecturer and 15 students. In 2013, BTI has 450 students throughout New Zealand, Australia, Tonga and Thailand, 40 permanent staff and more than a dozen programmes across counselling, social work and all spheres of teacher education.
